What Type Of Blog Commenter Are You?

Do you comment on blogs? I do. One of the things I love about blogging is the interactive element. Every time I get a new comment on my blog, I do a bit of a happy dance. While all comments are appreciated, not all comments are created equal.  Here are a few of the many types of blog commenters.

The Comment-For-The-Sake-Of-Commenting Commenter- This type of commenter writes a comment simply to announce their presence and to inform you that they’ve "read" your post (ie. they've clicked on it, and hightailed it straight to the Comments section, hoping they can come up with something to say that won't alert you to the fact that they didn't read a single word of your post). Typically, this is done in the hopes that because they left you a comment, you will check out their blog. If you write me a comment that says nothing but "I'm following you. Please follow me back" , please know that I will be deleting your comment before it ever appears on my post. Not that you care because you'll probably never read my blog again, anyway.

The My-Comment-Is-Awesomer-Than-Your-Blog-Post Commenter- Also known as the Hilarious Commenter. These commenters somehow regularly come up with clever, witty, little nuggets of pure gold. You want to hate them because their comments makes your posts look pathetic in comparison, but you love them because they make you laugh so hard you pee your mom jeans.

The Angry Commenter- This is the very worst type of commenter- arguable worse than the Comment-For-The-Sake-Of-Commenting Commenter. The Angry Commenter is mad at the world. And it’s your fault. And they’ll tell you so. (And they are not afraid to tell you that you shouldn’t start a sentence with “And”.)
The LOL Commenter- The LOL Commenter writes nothing in their comment except for “LOL” (sometimes followed by one or more exclamation marks). I actually don’t mind the LOL Commenter. The LOL Commenter just wants to share that they liked your post without writing an entire dissertation about it. I’m okay with that. And if they are really just a thinly veiled Comment-For-The-Sake-Of-Commenting Commenter, I'm still okay with that. I'm just going to go on believing that they are actually laughing out loud and that makes me feel like a rockstar. Don't ruin my fantasy, okay?

The Anonymous Commenter- These secret scribes often leave the best comments, but it drives me crazy because I can't find out who's behind their works of genius. Is the Anonymous Commenter someone I know in real life? Are all of my Anonymous Commenters the same person, or are there several of them? Are they my mom?

What type of blog commenter are you?

  1. The "new follower, please follow back" are the ones that bug me the most! I would say I am a "thoughtful" commenter, only commenting if I really enjoy the post, it really made my day etc. Good post! :)

    1. Thanks. I like that- "thoughtful commenter". I like to think of myself that way too. :)

  2. Well now i am scared to comment. Love all the types you lined up - i once saw an e-card that said,"i only check your blog to see if anyone commented on my hilarious comment", which i thought should become an award to hand out to those types ;-) Fab post!

    1. Don't be scared to comment! The last thing I want to do is to scare away commenters! I love all comments that are genuine.

  3. I'm following you. Please follow me back...;) Was really tempted to just stop there and hit publish, but I'm not that cool! I think you've hit the nail on the head with comment-types. I would try to say something more witty here too, but I don't want to be the Comment-is-Awesomer type, so I'll stop (yeah, that's my reason--not that I can't think of a darn creative thing to say b/c my mind is blank...)

  4. Okay, this seriously cracked me up. Enough for me to write that as a sentence instead of LOL.

    1. Thank you! I feel super special to have gotten the long version.

  5. Love it! The anonymous ones always scare me a little too especially since I know that some of them are, in fact, friends or family and it always makes me wonder who exactly it is.

    1. Exactly. Friends and family have no business being anonymous!

  6. This is awesome! And I'm not saying that just so you'll visit my blog...this time. I think I'm guilty of all of these except the angry one...I hope I haven't inadvertently done that.

One I would add that I'm guilty of is: newer blogger who doesn't know it's inappropriate to leave their unasked for blog link in the comments because they have a related post. Actually, I'm still not sure if that's inappropriate. If someone had previously written a post on the same topic, I think I would want to see it...unless it was really good, then I wouldn't want to see it because i would realize how much my post sucks. But if their post was pitiful, then I would feel great. I'm still not sure. What do you think?

    1. I have also left a link for a related post I've written, but I have read that some people consider that to be kind of a tacky move. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it, and if someone wrote something on the same topic as one of my posts, I'd be really interested to read it. Like any comments, I think all that matters is that it's genuine. If you leave me a comment linking to your related post at any point, I would be than happy to read it. :)

  7. Sometimes I am an anonymous commenter because I accidently forgot to fill the thing out. I am the type of commenter that never feels like I'm doing enough. People will read and comment on my blog and in my life that is spinning out of control I don't find the time to reciprocate often enough. Then, I feel bad :-( I don't get any of those come check out my blog comments though hmmmm

    1. I know what you mean. It can definitely be hard to keep up with it all.

  8. My comment style is evolving. I used to write something just to let bloggers know I'd paid them a visit, but as my blog list expands I tend to respond only if I have something relevant to say.

    1. That makes sense. I love commenting on blogs, but it is definitely time consuming.

  9. I think, for the most part, I'm a thoughtful commenter. At least I try to be. And it is perfectly acceptable, especially in a blog, to start a sentence with the word "and".

By the way you do make me LOL on a regular basis :)

    1. Thanks, Shayna! Yes, starting a sentence with "and" is completely legit, in my opinion. Not that anyone has criticized me for doing it, but I could see it happening. I'm just waiting for someone to tell me to stop using so many parentheses.

  10. This is your mom. Don't forget to floss. (Seriously, it's Rachel from TaoOfPoop.blogspot.com. You left a comment on my blog and, yes, I did a happy dance!)

  11. I love this post.! I am an insecure commenter, always wishing I could come up with something clever to write, typing and deleting 5 (or more) times and then I end up not commenting at all. :( If I am feeling confident I leave a line or two because I know how much I love getting comments (not that I do all that often)... and now I am going to click publish while resisting the urge to delete this whole thing...

  12. If you could see me now, I'd be down on the floor bowing down to my laptop open to this post. Am I trying to be the "my comment is way awesomer than your blog post" commenter. Maybe? You're not sure. What. Eveeeeeer! Seriously though, what great idea for a post, and speaking of commenters (who pose as your BFF for a while and then vanish), sorry to have been AWOL for a while!

    1. LOL. I've been a little AWOL myself lately, so no worries! :)

  13. I have no idea. I love to read blogs and I think sometimes my comments don't reflect just how amazing the posts are. I wish I could write more sometimes, but it hard because than another kid is screaming and I have to attend way from the post. This is a seriously good post!

Nominations are over and voting is open and you are there under humor!

  15. I was going to do this same post, even started it a few times in my head but mine kept taking a left turn into "mean". You did it justice, thanks. Mind if I cut and paste and say I did it? (yes, I'm kidding). What got me started was this comment on my blog "you should me back". Think she meant "follow me back" but not only didn't she read my blog, she couldn't even proofread her 4 word comment. Oops, taking that left turn again!

    1. That's actually really funny, Karen. I definitely think you could write a good post about that. The possibilities are endless!

  16. I try to be a thoughtful and/or funny commenter-depending on what the situation calls for. I've never posted anonymously and I don't do the please follow me back routine. I figure if a blogger likes my comment & wants to find out more about me they will. If not it's his/her loss.

  17. Bahahahaha. This is awesome. I have yet to have an Angry Commenter (but I'm sure I will someday soon!).

I don't mind the LOLers either. At least I know they are reading and enjoying.

Not sure where I fall. I try hard to read and comment, but my daughter keeps me busy, so while I'm good at reading, I don't always get to the commenting part!

Awesome post - you nailed these ones!!!!

    1. Thanks! I haven't had the angry commenter yet, either, but I know it's just a matter of time before I piss someone off!

  18. Oh how perfect this is! I always giggle at the "following you, come follow me" commenters. I like to think that I am a thoughtful commenter, my downfall is replying to the comments on my own blog! Something I am working on.

Thanks for this, it really was perfect!

    1. Yes the "following you come follow me" commenters are super annoying. And why does spell check keep underlining "Commenters"? I'm convinced it's a word!
