Dear Rude (Possibly Drunk) Random Stranger

Dear Rude (Possibly Drunk) Random Stranger who accosted me on the street to tell me that “he” (my daughter) should have a hat on because it’s hot out:

First of all, “he” is a girl. I generally assume that babies who are wearing pink frilly dresses are girls, but that’s just me.

Also, please note the sun hat (also pink) in her hands. Obviously, that’s just there for decoration, and not because I put it on her head and she kept taking it off every 3 seconds. No baby in the history of life has ever taken their hat off. Nope.

And just for the record, while I do agree that she should be wearing a hat, it really has nothing to do with the fact that it’s hot out. It’s because it’s sunny out. But maybe that distinction is a little too advanced for you, so I'll let that one slide.

Oh, and here’s a little lesson in etiquette, if you talk to someone and they reply with a barely audible “uh huh” and keep walking, it means that you should shut up and walk away. It does not mean that you should continue harassing them and telling them repeatedly how their kid needs a hat and how you’re a parent too (and whatever else you rambled on about).

Also, since you are a parent too, maybe you should go home and spend some time with your kids (who I’m sure are perfectly outfitted for the weather), instead of being drunk in the street at 5 in the afternoon, telling strangers how to raise their children.

Yours truly,

Laura

  1. Awesome!!! We got "he" a lot too when my daughter was dressed head to toe in pink! Not sure how they didn't notice "he" was a girl!! When I pierced her ears the "he" comments suddenly stopped :)

  3. Blow him a kiss from me if you see him again. Also, I'm very impressed that you were taking your daughter (questionably son) on a walk at 5pm. That's usually just about when I'm melting down in The Witching Hour right along with the kids and am busily, lamely stalking the door in anticipation of my husband--you wow me!

    1. The late afternoon walk is what saves my sanity at that time of day. Stroller = not having to chase baby around the house. Getting to walk in a straight line and not having to bend down every two seconds is surprisingly relaxing, I find.

  4. I never understood why strangers would think I would dress my little boy in pink either....

Question, was the possibly drunk dude wearing a hat?

BTW Laura yesterday I was awarded the Versatile Blogger Award and, as such, have been charged with the delightful task of awarding it to other deserving bloggers and, guess what? That's you! You can read all about it here:

    1. Thanks so much Shayna! And congrats to you on your award....Good question about the dude wearing a hat. You know what? I didn't notice. I was so busy being flustered and trying to ignore him that I didn't get a good look at him. I was just thinking to myself, "keep walking. Look straight ahead."

  5. Probably the type who is not sure how many kids he has, what their names are or which kid is with which babbymomma... I am not sure which is scarier, being accosted by morons like this, or knowing that they are breeding...

  7. Good lord this happens to me all the time one of my four is always doing the wrong thing in the grocery store... I love it when one of my kids stands up in the grocery cart and some random lunatic runs at me screaming even though I have both hand on my child and telling them to sit down.

  11. Oh, we've all had that moment. Ugh. I only wish I had started blogging years ago since I'm too brain-cell deprived to remember everything eight years later...

  12. Oh, I remember a stranger coming up to me when I was walking with my firstborn (who was bundled up head to toe) and saying that it was too cold to have a baby out. This was in Virginia! I told her that my doctor said it was good for the baby, and walked away.
